Epic Historical Drama Movie Review: **** Cleopatra (1963)

This is an excellent drama about Cleopatra (Elizabeth Taylor) and two lovers.  First there was Julius Caesar (Rex Harrison) who restored her to her throne which her brother was wrestling from her.  She went to Rome with him, and was there when Caesar was murdered by members of the senate who thought him too powerful.  Ane then Mark Antony (Richard Burton) who extracted revenge upon the murderers, but found himself out of favor in Rome with Octavion Caesar Augustus (Roddy McDowall) having power in Rome.  Antony rules over the extern Roman Empire which included Egypt.

He travels to Egypt, starting a love affair with Cleopatra, but wanting to gain the use of the armies of Egypt.  Antony returns to Rome, and is forced to marry the sister of Octavian.  Antony now has a predicament, who sill he choose.  When he chooses Cleopatra it is the motivation for Octavion to even attack Antony.  Antony takes the fight to the sea, but is a master of fighting on land.  Fighting at sea most of his forces are not engaged, and he suffers a humiliating defeat.  This spirals until he and Cleopatra are both dead.

I found this movie intereting and enjoyable.  Warning--it is very long, five hours.  It was on two DVD disks.
