Harry Potter/ Fantastic Beasts Movies Summaries

*****  Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone  (2001) Introduces Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), Hermione (Emma Watson), and Ron (Rupert Grint) who become fast friends.

**** Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. (2002) Harry Potter discovers he can talk to snakes, which is not necessarily good. 

****^ Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Askaban  (2004) In this movie Harry discovers he has a God-father, Sirius Black (Gary Oldman) who did not betray his parents,  That was another friend, Peter Pettigrew (Timothy Spall).  He also forms and ally with a werewolf, Remus Lupin (David Thewlis) another friend of his father's.  

****^ Hatty Potter and the Goblet of Fire  (2005) In this movie Potter wins the goblet, but really loses.  The co-winner, Cedric Diggory (Robert Pattinson) is murdered by Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes.). Barty Crouch (David Tenant) has snuck into school taking the place of Alastor Moody (Brendan Gleeson) using poly juice potion.

****^ Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007) Harry Potter takes over the teaching of defense against the dar arts, as the Minister's woman with the job, Dolores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton) refuses to teach but enjoys more torturing children.  Sirius Black is killed in this episode by Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter.) 

****^ Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (2009) Harry Potter discovers a journal belonging to Severus Snape (Alan Rickman) and without becomes very good at Potions.  He learns of Horcruxes from Albus Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) and has to retrieve a memory of Professor Horace Slughorn (Jim Broadbent) who taught Voldemost of horcruxes man years ago.  Voldemort uses Draco (Tom Felton) to kill Dumbledore, but Snape does it in the end.

****^ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part 1 (2010). So begins the journey to destroy Voldemost once and for all.  Harry visits Luna Lovegood (Evanna Lynch) in his search for horcruxes.  Dobby (Toby Jones) ends up dead.

****^ Happy Potter and the Half Blood Prince: Part 2 (2011) This movie leads to a big battle at Hogwarts between the dark forces of Voldemort and the rest of the school.  Both sides do not escape unscathed.  But Harry and Ginny Weasley (Bonnie Wright) and Hermione and Ron are together as friends in the end.

***** Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016) Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) who is a student of magical creatures loses a few of them in New York.  Porpentina (Katherine Watterson) starts off his govermental agent but they form an attraction, as does her sister, Queenie (Alison Sudl) with regular guy Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler.) Grinelwald (Johnny Depp) was behind mayhem in New York for which Scamander was blamed.  Grindelwald was caught.

***** Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) Scamander is caught into the fray after Grindelwald escapes and starts amassing his army.  Magical laws do not allow Queenie and Kowalski to be together, so Queenie joins Grindelwald.

 Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022) Much intrigue and magical manipulation to get to Grindelwald as he is seeking the highest international magical office.  Dumbledore (Jude Law) is greatly involved. Mads Mikkelsen portrays Grindelwald.  

James Bond Movie Review: ***** No Time to Die: (2021)

 James Bond (Daniel Craig) is back, after taking a long hiatus.  He is with Madeleine (Léa Seydoux) until he feels like she betrayed him, and puts her on a train.  We then pick up the story some five years later.  The CIA recruits James Bond to investigate the Project Heracles, a bionic weapon that can be manipulated through DNA to attack only select people.  Bond agrees.  He attends a party in Cuba with Sceptre, who has stolen the virus and the scientist Valdo Obruchev (David Dencik) who created the virus.  Sceptre thinks the virus will kill Bond, having his DNA.  However Obruchev has switched the DNA signature.  When Bond is suppose to die, all the Sceptre operatives die instead. Bond escapes with Obruchev.  He had been helped by CIA operative Paloma (Ana de Armas).  He delivers Obruchev to the CIA aboard a sail boat.  Bond is betrayed by one of the CIA agents, Logan Ash (Billy Magnussen).  Ash kills Bond's CIA friend Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright) and blows up the boat they are on and escapes via sea plane with Obruchev.  Ash and Obruchev are double agents for Lyutsifer Safin (Rami Malek) who has it in for Sceptre because they killed his family and left him scarred with their poison.

Somehow Blofeld (Christoph Waltz) the head of the CIA attended the meeting in Cuba from prison.  Bond is determined to visit him.  Blofeld insisted he would only talk to Madeleine, so Bond sees her after five years and discovers she has a baby.  She comes with Bond to see Blofeld, but also brings the virus with Blofeld's signature.  Blofeld dies.  Bond is now again working with MI6, M (Ralph Fiennes).  M and MI6 was involved in the Hercales virus.  He also encounters Q (Ben Whishaw), Moneypenny (Naomie Harris), Tanner (Rory Kinnear) and a new 007, Nomi (Lashana Lynch).  

Bond while protecting Madeleine and her daughter is attacked by men of Safin.  Bond is able to kill most of them, including Ash, but not bfore the kidnap Madeleine and her girl.

They determine Safin intends to kill millions with the virus as he has many DNA signatures.  They determine he must have his manufacturing operation on his family island.  Upon arrival they discover he also has a rocket to deliver the virus.  He has a large scale manufacturing operation.  Bond and Nomi attack the facility, but only a large scale bombing will butn off the toxins.  Bond has to open the doors so the bomb will be effective.  They rescue Madeleine and the daughter (who is actually Bond's daughter.  Nomi takes them to safety while Bond confronts Safin he is able to kill him, but not before being infected with a strain of the virus that would kill those he loves.  He orders the missles to strike the island, and doesn't get off.  We assume he has perished.  

This is the last, and I think the bet of all the Bond films.  The action is intense, as are the emotions.  When Bond allows a truck to crush Ash he reminds him that his brother was Felix who Ash had killed.  We also have a complicated love relationship, and a Bond baby as a result.  

James Bond Movie: ****^ Skyfall (2012)

 James Bond (Daniel Craig) is back.  But the first scene shows him shot and presumed dead.  They have his funeral and everything.  Someone is out to kill M (Judi Dench) and Bond comes out of retirement to protect her.  In the earlier scene Bond was trying to recover information about secret agents which had gotten away as Silva (Javier Bardem) had hacked their system.  So Bond must figure out how to protect M.  He is assisted by Eve (Naomi Harris).  She is the same agent who shot him in the first scene trying to keep from losing the information identifying all NATO agents.  

Silva is determined to kill M.  He is a past agent who ate the cyanide tablet placed in his teeth, but it didn't kill him.  It just disfigured his mouth.  He wears false teeth that hide this.  He is very bitter towards M.

Even after he is captured, he is able to escape by further infecting the MIS computers, so Bond runs to the home of his birth where he hopes to protect M.  In the home is a former companion, Kincade (Albert Finney).  He joins Bond in protecting M.  They come after Bond with lots of men and a helicopter.  They hold of the initial wave but the second wave begins to overwhelm them.  M and Kincade escape through tunnels under the home.  Bond blows up the home to even the odds.  After the explosion only Silva and one other man are alive.  Even the helicopter was too close and is destroyed.  In the initial wave, M was wounded.  

Bond tries to rejoin them after the explosion.  In doing so he kills the last man other than Silva.  Silva gets to M first, but Bond does him in with a knife throw to the back.  However M dies from loss of blood.  The wound was more serious than thought.  

In this version we get a new Moneypenny--Eve Moneypenny.  We also get a new Q (Ben Whishaw) who is more a computer man, but gets outsmarted when Silva hacks the system.  We also get a new Q for the next episode, Gareth Mallory (Ralph Fiennes) who has been M's number 2.

The Bond movies seem to be getting better.  Their is more intrigue to them.  

James Bond Movie Review: ****^ Spectre (2015)

James Bond (Daniel Craig) delivers a punch.  Before M died she asked him to kill a man, and then attend the funeral.  Which he does, and there starts to find the vast organization.  He first goes to the widow, Lucia (Monica Bellucci) who has been marked by the organization for death.  She does not defect with Bond, givres him information about the organization.  Even when headquarters goes silent because all spy agencies have been compromised by Spectre which is putting dummy people in charge of the world's intelligence.  M (Ralph Fiennes) says Bond is on his own.  One major act, blowing up many towns, and they will be in.  The 007 program will be deleted.  C (Andrew Scott) is a major part in this, as he is a double agent.  

But Bond is on the trail after seeing an old nemesis, Mr White (Jesper Christensen) a member of Spectre he killed years prior.  How could that be?  Because of this lapse Bond goes to the psychiatrist, Madeleine (Léa Seydoux) the daughter of Mr. White for examination.  He tells her of her father's death, but she does not want to help him.  He is humiliated, but when he sees the psychiatrist being kidnapped he rescues her.  She blames him for her trouble.  However she is helpful.  Her father was in Spectre.  She agrees to go with him to discover what happened to her father.  They finally meet the head of Spectre, Blofeld (Christoph Waltz).  He makes her watch the suicide of her father.  There is a terrible scene of Bond being tortured, with the girl and Bond's bomb watch saving the day.  This time Bond needs help.  There is a vast spy satellite network which is to go online and replace all spying agencies.  This is controlled by Spectre, and C is a big part.   M and Q (Ben Whishaw) and Moneypenny (Naomie Harris) must tackle the new intelligence web and stop the bombs by hacking their computer system. C falls to his death in a fight with M.  

Bond confronts Blofeld, but can't get to him.  He discovers he has to save Madeleine.  He is able to save her and then he chases Blofield in a boat while Blofeld is in a helicopter.  The helicopter crashes with Blofeld inside.  He is arrested, rather than killed.

I think this Bond movie is very well done, with a good balance between action and intrigue.  Of course Spectre has a strongman.  Hinx (Dave Bautista).  At one time he pokes someone's eyes in.  But he is often chasing Bond and usually coming out on the best end of the fights.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

This is a great continuation of the Harry Potter story.  This year Dumbledore is back at Hogwarts, and they have the task to figure out how to kill Voldemort.  Part of this plan is totally unexpected.  Dumbledore, is intent on discovering how they can defeat Dumbledore.  To do this he must review the memories of Professor Horace Slughorn (Jim Broadbent) (prior potions teacher who has agreed to come back to teach) with regards to a conversation with Tom Riddle (Voldemort).  This conversation had to do with Horcruxes, and how you could put your soul into a physical object, and thereby assure your own immortality.  This could be done by murdering someone.  They discover that Voldemort did this several times, and thus there are many Horcruxes around, which must be destroyed.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince:

Draco Malfoy also received a special mission from Voldemort, and Snape is brought into this agreement with a spell he cannot brake, to assist Draco.  Dumbledore and Harry meet regularly to review memories of Voldemort in the pensieve.  Harry Potter does very well in school thanks to a book owned by "The Half Blood Prince" which he has found.  This gives keys to making potions and casting curses.  

Dumbledore and Harry visit a cave, where they feel they will find a Horcrux.  This experience leaves Dumbledore in a weakened state, he had to drink a poison to get to the Horcrux, but they do discover what they think is the Horcrux.  As they get back to Hogwarts, Draco has let death eaters into the school.  He faces Dumbledore, but is not able to kill him, but Snape does kill him.

The last scene is Harry chasing Snape.  He uses a curse from the book, and Snape says, don't use my own curses on me.

I enjoy all the Harry Potter movies.  This movie is no exception.  There is plenty of action.  The movies keep getting a bit darker as we go along, and the murder of Dumbledore was not expected.

Movie Review: ****^Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

This movie is made perfect by the appearance of Dolores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton) who is the "teacher" of the dark arts.  Actually she is a plant of the ministry who is to keep an eye on Hogwarts, and make sure that news of Voldemort's return is considered to be nothing more than a lie.  Because they are not able to really learn at school, they set up a special class, Dumbledore's Army, and hold class in the room of requirements.  This organization mirrors the Order of the Phoenix, an organization among the adult wizard world which is set up to protect against Voldemort.  In the meantime Hagrid has been among the giants, and shares a half brother who he has brought back with him, and who is living in the wood.  This half brother is a full blood giant, and more wild.  When Umbridge breaks up the gang, and discovers their name, Dumbledore is forced out of the school, but instead of going quietly, he flies off with the help of his phoenix.  However the school is left unprotected, in Umbridge's care.  Voldemort uses an ability to invade Harry's mind, and lets him know that Sirius in danger (this is not true, but a vision put in Harry's brain by Voldemort.)  Umbridge intervenes before they are able to go to the rescue.  She is intent on breaking the group and incriminating Dumbledore.  For this reason Hermione is able to lead her on a wild goose chase, where the giant and the centaurs are able to take care of Umbridge.
The group takes off to the rescue, and find themselves in the ministry, where prophecies are kept.  Voldemort is intent on having the Harry Potter prophesy.  Harry is able to recover this, but as it is a trap, death eaters are waiting for them.  The Order of the Phoenix comes to the rescue, but in the struggle Sirius dies.  Also in the struggle Dumbledore battles Voldemort in the Ministry, and his existence can no longer be denied. 
This movie keeps up the tension of the series.  It is very well done.  It continues the fight of good against evil. 

Movie Reviews: ****^Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows part 2

I think everyone has seen Harry Potter.  I saw it in 3-D in Logan while we were there.  Sheri had already seen the movie, but said she preferred the extra dimension.

The story was intense, as it was suppose to be, and the battle was entertaining.  I have only a couple minor complaints.  I wish they could have focused more on the battle, and a little less on Harry.  Of course I guess the story was Harry.  My only other complaint, is the epilogue left me hollow somehow.  I think I would have liked to have seen more characters like Melville and Luna.  Other than the three, the only character I recognized was Draco.
With this movie, the series is now complete, and our heroes have finished Hogwarts.  Harry Potter has been a joy for our family throughout.  I remember bringing home four or five copies at a time when a new book came out.  Nobody wanted to wait.  I also remember Thanksgiving weekends seeing the movie when it came out, one in San Diego with cousins.  It has been a fun ride.

Movie Review: ****^Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I

What is not to like about a Harry Potter movie.  The only thing keeping me fro giving this movie the full four stars is the  movie deals too much with the visions of Ron Weasley.  This had to do with the horcrux they were carrying.  It is part of the plot but it could have been doe in a less compromising way.

The snake was extremely scary, and I jumped out of my seat.  This was very well done.

The presentation of the Lovegood residence was very good, and the explanation of the Deathly Hallows.

This movie ended very sad.   It divides the book into two parts.  There was someone in the back of the theater crying uncontrollably.  Her friends were telling her to shut-up.  I had tears in my eyes.  I don't blame her for being emotional.

Movie Review: **^The Duchess

This is a movie from 2008 starring Keira Knightly (Pirates of the Caribbean and Pride and Prejudice) and Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort from Harry Potter.)  It portrays the upper class in England and is reported to be a true story about the Duchess of Davenport.  The Duchess enters a hasty marriage relationship, and later discovers that the Duke is  philanderer.  He keeps the duchess to sire an heir.  Of course the first two babies are girls, intermingled with a couple stillborn boys.  She finally sires an heir, and then has her own fling and becomes pregnant.  Because of the Duke's influence, he arranges for her to be on vacation to cover up the pregnancy, while forcing her to leave her lover under threat of not seeing her children again.

The movie portrays the difference between laws surrounding men and women.  The Duke takes a live-in lover, and expects his wife to just deal with it.

The movie shows the impressive wealth of the few in England at this time.  It portrays several castles in which the Duke resided.

It also shows the love of a mother, and what a mother will sacrifice to keep her children.  I would mildly recommend this movie.

Movie Review: *** The Avengers (1998)

This is not the Marvel's Avengers, but an earlier movie based on a British spy television series with Uma Thurman and Ralph Fiennes as Emma Peel and John Steed.  Emma Peel is accused of sabotage of her weather machine, putting all of Britain in dander, and Steed her spy companion.  They are controlled by Mother and Father.  Sir August de Wynter, played by Sean Connery, is our mad scientist, responsible for framing Peel, and seeking to control the weather of the world, and thereby blackmail all of the countries of the world, if they want rain or sunshine.  Of course with a name like August de Wynter, he must be insane, but he makes a worthy opponent all the same.
There are several things about this show that are confusing, like why did the three spies have to split up to go through a maze.  Staying together would have been a better idea.  The show is sometimes really confusing and hard to follow.
