Netflix Movie Review: Remarkably Bright Creatures

This is an emotional life drama narrated by an octopus (Alfred Molina).  In the end two characters come together in an unexpected way.  Tova (Sally Field) lost her son when he was in high school due to a boat accident.  Cameron (Lewis Pullman) comes to town looking for his father.  He stays with a friend, Ethan Mack (Colm Meaney) of Tova's, living in his van.  He is hired at the local aquarium, where the octopus resides.  He is going to replace Tova as the janitor, who is thinking of crossing the bay and living in a senior home.  Cameron find the man he thought was his father, but he is not.  He has a girlfriend, Avery (Sofia Black D'alia).  But he blows it when he meets her son who is high school age.

The octopus has to go to drastic measures to fix things, before he returns to the ocean to die.

This movie is a current offer on aNetflix.  It is very likable.  The ending is very good.

Movie Review: ****^The Amazing Spider-Man 2

This is the continuation of the Spider-Man based on Marvel comics series.  Peter (Andrew Garfield) is torn about whether he should continue his relationship with Gwen (Emma Stone) after promising her father as he was dying that he would not endanger her life.  There are still bad people out there, and his rescuing causes him to almost miss his graduation.
His friend from ten years ago, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHann) returns from being away, just before Mr. Osborn passes away, from a genetic disease his son also has.  He determines he needs Spider-Man's blood to heal himself, as it has a power from spiders which self heals.  In the meantime, Max (Jamie Foxx) has fallen into a vat of electric eels at Oscorp, and becomes Electro.  Peter also slowly unravels the mystery behind the disappearance of his parents.  His Aunt May (Sally Field) is able to give him some information.  And with a note he finds in his dad's briefcase, he discovers a secret lab.  However, Oscorp, unknowingly throws two monsters against themselves, and against Spider-man.  Electro, and the Green Goblin who is also Harry.
I don't want to be a spoiler, but both Tony and I came home sad from this experience.  It did not end the way either of us thought it would.  Although Peter does make a decision about himself and Gwen.

Movie Review: ****Lincoln (2012)

This movie is directed by Stephen Spielberg and stars Daniel Day-Lewis and Sally Field as the president and his wife.  This movie is a historical presentation of the thirteenth amendment and the difficulty with getting it passed, and President Lincoln's desire to get it passed during the lame-duck congress, after the Democrats had been defeated in the house.  He did not want to wait for the new congress to be seated, for if the war should conclude he might lose the people's motivation to pass the amendment; that in passing it might quicken the end of the war.
The movie does not present the early parts of the war, in fact Lee and Grant are already facing each other at Petersburg, and Lincoln has won reelection, in the same election that swept many Democrats out of congress.
The passing of the thirteenth amendment was not easy as the movie portrays, and the movie shows the political moves, and promises Lincoln pulled out to official abolish slavery in the United States.  Political victory would require 20 votes from across the aisle, while not losing any votes from the Republican Party.
The witticisms of Abraham Lincoln made for an enjoyable part of the movie, and I remember thinking during the movie, I wish I had written that down.  Also his humorous stories kept the movie light, because the movie was heavy.
This movie was not a biography of Lincoln, nor was it a history of the civil war.  It had very little of the actual action, other than some Africa Americans telling their story, and showing the result of battle.  The Gettysburg Address is recited at the beginning of the move, and towards the end we see works from Lincoln's second inauguration.
The movie also does a very good job of portraying the son's of Mary and Abraham Lincoln.  Robert, his oldest who wants to be in uniform rather than at school.  He finally gets his wish, being placed on Grant's staff.  Tad, his youngest is dealing with the death of the middle brother, Willie.  He views lithographs of slaves, and is very much interested in the freedom of the slaves.
The other actors do a very good job.  You would think a movie spending much of its time showing congress would be boring.  In this case it was not, because the story took place in congress, and the manipulations, name calling, and in some cases restraining of one's opinions to get the amendment passed, were fascinating. Tommy Lee Jones as Representative Stephens from Ohio was terrific.
A very enjoyable movie.

Movie Review: ****^The Amazing Spider Man

I have now seen this movie twice, 3-D and regular.  I can't say that 3-D added a lot, except at the end when he is flying around.  I saw another review that said it was good; but not amazing.  I would say it was amazing, but not perfect.  There are plenty of special effects, there is a love story, which doesn't mimic the other Spider Man movies, there is a nerd who becomes Spider Man, there is a different villain.  All of these make for a great movie.  Tony came out of the movie climbing the walls in the restroom.  Now that is great.

Peter (Andrew Garfield) likes Gwen (Emma Stone), who is a fellow scientist at school.  She claims to top of her class.  Peter's father is a former scientist at OsCorp, but hid a secret formula and fled, but he and Peter's mother died in a plane crash.  Peter crashesbreaks into OsCorp, which leads to the famous biting.  Peter designs his own webslingers based on technology of OsCorp.

Peter goes to dinner with Gwen, whose father is a Captain (Denis Leary) on the police force.  The police do not appreciate Spider Man, and have been trying to arrest him.  However he does let Gwen know of his secret

Oh, in the mean time, Peter has inadvertantly given to Dr Conners (Rhys Ifans), his father's ex partner, the formula his father hid.  Dr. Connors uses the formula, and turns himself into a super lizard.  Peter/ Spider Man feels responsible and sets out to stop him.  He tries to warn the police, but they think he is crazy.

I liked the movie--except the crane scene.  I thought that was corny.
