Netflix Movie Review: Remarkably Bright Creatures

 This is an emotional life drama narrated by an octopus (Alfred Molina).  In the end two characters come together in an unexpected way.  Tova (Sally Field) lost her son when he was in high school due to a boat accident.  Cameron (Lewis Pullman) comes to town looking for his father.  He stays with a friend, Ethan Mack (Colm Meaney) of Tova's, living in his van.  He is hired at the local aquarium, where the octopus resides.  He is going to replace Tova as the janitor, who is thinking of crossing the bay and living in a senior home.  Cameron find the man he thought was his father, but he is not.  He has a girlfriend, Avery (Sofia Black D'alia).  But he blows it when he meets her son who is high school age.  

The octopus has to go to drastic measures to fix things, before he returns to the ocean to die.  

This movie is a current offer on aNetflix.  It is very likable.  The ending is very good.

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in ***^Far and Away (1992)

 An Irish couple posing as brother and sister Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman) immigrate to America; she from an aristocratic crowd and he from a poorer family, losing their farm.  They hope to start over in Oklahoma territory.  She loses her money--silver she took from her mother to a swindler.  So it turns out he is more apt to earn money in the new world.  He becomes a boxer and does well.  But they are both put out on the street when he loses a fight, mostly because is manager (Colm Meany) makes advances on his "sister."

They are cold and hungry, and eventually break into an empty house.  She is shot when the owner discovers them.  He takes her to her ex suitor (Thomas Gibson) who has followed them to America. 

Somehow they both end up ant the day the Oklahoma territory is opening.  Her parents (Robert Prosky and Barbara Babcock) are also there.

I enjoyed this movie.  I have a inkling that much of the history is off however.

In Theater: ****Tolkien (2019)

Tolkien:  I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.  It presents the life of Tolkien, particularly with regards to the war and his love.  The love story is really great, as Tolkien met his love before the war.  He was an orphan, and the Father who had been given guardianship over him discouraged the relationship, and in fact sent the woman away; but love wins out.  The wars scenes were very well done, and explain some of the visualization used in the Hobbit and Lord of the Ring trilogy.  I think this movie deserves more audience than it is getting.  Lily Collins and Nicholas Hoult portray the love couple.  Colm Meaney portrays the Father.
