Christmas/ Civil War Movie/ Review: ****I Heard the Bells (2022)

 This movie tells the story of Henry W Longfellow and his writing the poem "I Heard the Bells On Christmas Day" which became the Christmas song.  Longfellow (Stephen Atherholt) had become morose over the death of his wife.  Her dress had caught fire and she died of her injuries.  Longfellow attempted to put it out and burn himself in the process, scarring his face.  He wore a beard after this.

Longfellow had determined not to write poetry again, even though he had great success with poems such as Hiawatha, Paul Revere's Ride and Evangeline.  Add to this his son left home and joined the military.  This was during the Civil War.  He son was severely wounded, and forced to come home as a result.  He told Longfellow how he was in a church, and the bell, even though lieing on the floor, had inspired him.  This set Longfellow to writing his poem.

This historical drama is very good.  I would recommend it.  I understand it is fairly accurate, although there are different stories about how his wife's dress caught fire.

Christmas Poem/Song: The Friendly Beasts

This is a very old song, but also very pertinent today.  It was written in the 1200s:

1. Jesus our brother, kind and good
Was humbly born in a stable rude
And the friendly beasts around Him stood,
Jesus our brother, kind and good.
2. "I," said the donkey, shaggy and brown,
"I carried His mother up hill and down;
I carried her safely to Bethlehem town."
"I," said the donkey, shaggy and brown.
3. "I," said the cow all white and red
"I gave Him my manger for His bed;
I gave him my hay to pillow his head."
"I," said the cow all white and red.
4. "I," said the sheep with curly horn,
"I gave Him my wool for His blanket warm;
He wore my coat on Christmas morn."
"I," said the sheep with curly horn.
5. "I," said the dove from the rafters high,
"I cooed Him to sleep so He would not cry;
We cooed him to sleep, my mate and I."
"I," said the dove from the rafters high.
6. "I," said the rooster with the shining eye,
"I crowed the news up to the sky;
When the sun arose , I crowed to the sky.
I," said the rooster with the shining eye.
7. "I," said the camel all yellow and black,
"Over the desert upon my back,
I brought Him a gift in the Wise Men's pack.
I," said the camel all yellow and black.
8. Thus every beast by some good spell,
In the stable dark was glad to tell
Of the gift he gave Immanuel,
The gift he gave Immanuel.
9. "I," was glad to tell
Of the gift he gave Immanuel,
The gift he gave Immanuel.
Jesus our brother, kind and good.
