John Wayne Movie: The Wings of Eagles (1957)

The Wings of Eagles:  This is a Glen Ford, John Wayne movie with a totally different flavor.  The coloring is brighter, especially with the colorful car that (Frank W. "Spig" Wead (John Wayne) owns.  He is a pilot in training, but they never get to fly.  One day he takes off on his own, with an Army man aboard.  Maureen O’Hara portrays Min Wead his wife, who does not do well married to a military man.  She decides not to move from place to place.  Wead has some success, and comes home to meet his daughters and wife.  However, while at home, he has an accident and breaks his neck.  He ends up in the hospital as he slowly mends.  Again he separates from his wife.  She does not want to put she and his daughters in the position of caring for him.  It is not sure if he will ever recover.  However, he finally does, and becomes a writer for Hollywood.  After some success, he heads home again to reestablish with his wife.  They agree to amend, and move in together.  However that same day is Pearl Harbor, and Wead, even with his limitations decides to reenter the Navy if they will have him.  He gets a desk job; but eventually moves into combat.  His limitations almost get a sailor killed.  He has a heart attack.  He realizes retirement is in order, and finally he heads home to his wife.
This movie has a much different feel than a John Wayne film.  Wayne is all broken up and depressed.  However the movie is based on a real character, and represents the history of Naval aviation.  The colors are also a change from a typical John Wayne film; but I like it.
