"City of Ember" is written by Jeanne DuPrau and published in 2003 by
Yearling. The premise of this book is very well done. A safe haven city
is beginning to deteriorate and run out of supplies after 230 years of
habitation. It was designed to last 200 years, and then instructions
were left to help the people escape, and supposedly reinhabit the
earth. The city is plagued by more and more frequent black outs. The
generator which runs by hydro-power, is more and more prone to breaking
down. Lina Mayfleet has just finished school and is assigned to be a
runner. Doon Harrow, her classmate is assigned to the plumbing world,
working underneath the city. Lina discovers the old instructions for
Egress, how to escape the city. It is difficult to decipher them, as
they were chewed by her baby sister. This story has intrigue, and
problem solving, and exploration and adventure, and a twist at the end. I
enjoyed this read.
